Steroids
There are many different types of medications available that your vet may prescribe for your pet. We understand that it can all be a bit confusing, especially if you are given more than one type of medication. We have prepared a brief summary of some of the more common products you may be given.
Steroids are generally used as anti-inflammatories, although at higher doses they can be used to reduce the body’s immune response. They are often used to reduce itching in skin and ear disease. Steroids are usually tablets given by mouth but are also found in some topical preparations such as ear drops and skin creams. Commonly prescribed steroids in animals include prednisolone and dexamethasone.
