Side effects
Side effects are effects of a medication that are not those intended. Your vet may advise you of any side effects to look out for that are specific to a particular medication. They will tell you what to do if these side effects occur. However, as for people, some medications just don’t suit certain individuals and you may see an allergic type reaction or they may make your animal sick or have diarrhoea. Always consult your vet if you are worried about any changes since you started giving a medication. They may be able to suggest a different product that will suit your pet better. Below are some possible side effects of particular types of medication but others may occur in individual animals.
Type of medication / Possible side effects
Allergic type reactions including skin rash, similar to penicillin allergy in people. Sickness and/or diarrhoea.
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs):
Sickness and/or diarrhoea.
Steroids
Drinking more and urinating more. Increased appetite.
Shampoos and topical treatments:
Allergic type reaction at the place where it is used which may look red or irritated.
Remember: always consult your vet if you think your pet may be suffering side effects from a medication.
